Good collaboration extends the life of seawater pumps

When wellboat shipping companies experience pump failure, it can be expensive. Both in repairs and in lost operating time. For Dalen Industriservice, this was a familiar challenge. Together with Westing, they have found a solution that gives the pump houses a new and far more durable life.

A challenge with short lifespan and high costs
Seawater pumps used in well boats and fish farming facilities can have a short lifespan. After just 1-2 years, corrosion damage can occur, requiring the pumps to be replaced or overhauled.

– Before we started this collaboration with Westing, shipping companies often had to order completely new pumps, which could result in very long delivery times, says Kenneth Jøsokbakke of Dalen Industriservice.

The solution was new surface treatment and reuse
To meet the challenge, Dalen and Westing decided to find a new surface treatment that could extend the life of their customers' products. Together, they conducted extensive testing of various surface treatment products. The final choice fell on Interline 984. A coating developed for the oil and gas industry with high resistance to both seawater and harsh cleaning processes.

“Interline 984 has proven to be extremely durable. The paint system can withstand everything from corrosion, acid and ozone to modern disinfection methods. It is smooth, easy to keep clean and retains its quality even after many years of use,”,explains Fredrik Baade at Westing.

The collaboration allows Dalen to take in defective pumps, repair the corrosion damage to the steel, and then protect them with the new coating, thereby significantly extending their lifespan.

Leads to major savings and increased sustainability
For shipping companies, the new surface treatment means significant cost savings. Instead of buying new pumps, they can reuse existing ones.
Downtime is also reduced, because repaired pumps can be kept in stock and replaced quickly when the need arises, almost like a "tire hotel" for pumps.

– The feedback from our customers is exclusively positive, says Jøsokbakke.

Jøsokbakke says that the solution also provides a clear environmental benefit. By repairing and reusing rather than producing new, one contributes to a more circular economy in the aquaculture industry.

Collaboration built on trust
Both Dalen and Westing point to the good partnership as the key to success.

– For us, it is important to know our customers well, so that we can recommend the right solutions. Together with Dalen, we have found a method that works in practice, to the delight of both the supplier and the end customer, says Fredrik Baade at Westing.

– The collaboration between us and Westing means that customers get back a product that actually has a longer lifespan than when it was new. This is something that both we and the customers greatly appreciate, concludes Jøsokbakke.
