Cathodic protection is a method of protecting metal structures such as ships, pipelines and docks from corrosion. This is done by bonding the metal to another, more reactive metal that will corrode instead, or by using an electrical current to protect the metal. The method is particularly effective for structures that are in contact with water, helping to extend their lifespan and reduce maintenance costs.
ICCP - Impressed Current
ICCP (Impressed Current Cathodic Protection) is a method of protecting metals from corrosion using an external current source. The current is automatically adjusted based on measurements from reference electrodes, ensuring that the metal is maintained at a protected potential. This technique is often used on large structures such as ships, offshore platforms, pipelines and docks, where long-term corrosion protection is important. The system is highly effective and can be adapted to different conditions.
ICAF
ICAF stands for Impressed Current Anti-Fouling. This is a method used to prevent fouling on ship hulls and other underwater structures. The system works by using a weak electrical current that prevents organisms such as algae and shells from adhering to the surface. This helps maintain the ship's performance and reduce fuel consumption by minimizing resistance in the water. ICAF anodes are usually placed at strategic locations on the ship's hull to prevent fouling. They are often installed near areas that are most susceptible to fouling, such as cooling water intakes, rudders, propellers and other underwater structures. The anodes emit a weak electrical current that prevents organisms such as algae and shells from adhering to the surface
Slip ring
Slip ring: a ring that is attached to the propeller shaft on the inside of the hull to absorb the static electricity that the propeller creates when it rotates in bearings etc., this is to prevent electricity from going into the gearbox/engine.
