The Sjøblomsten is back on the fjord – marking a piece of restored coastal history
On April 18, the historic hunting schooner Søblomsten was launched in Vestnes to cheers from over 2,000 attendees. After several years of extensive restoration, the vessel is once again where it belongs, on the fjord and just meters from the spot where it was built in 1864 by boat builder Lars Hammeraas.
The restoration work has been a major undertaking, driven by dedicated volunteers in close cooperation with professional communities such as Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter, Riksantikvaren and Båtbyggarmuseet in Vestnes. The work began in Rørvik and was completed in Vestnes, a homecoming that means a lot to everyone who has followed the project.
Westing has contributed paint and surface products to ensure a solid and authentic finish that can withstand future use. This was an opportunity to support coastal culture, traditional craftsmanship, and local engagement that keeps cultural heritage alive.
That Søblomsten is now back on the fjord is a powerful image of what community and expertise can create. Westing congratulates everyone involved, including volunteers, professional communities, and museums, on an impressive effort and a successful launch.
